Small batch, handcrafted wines made in the Alpine Valleys, Victoria.

Nacre, also known as mother of pearl, is a natural wonder that captivates us with extreme beauty and timeless elegance. Historically associated with purity nacre is revered for it luminous iridescence, pearlescent luster and remarkable durability.

Nacre - an ode to the favourite women in my life.

The name Nacre—also known as mother of pearl—pays tribute to beauty, purity, and strength. With timeless elegance, nacre symbolizes the enduring legacy of the women in Meg’s family, all linked by the name Margaret, meaning "pearl." From her great-great-great-grandmother to her Nan, Mum, Aunt, and herself (Meg being a diminutive of Margaret), this lineage of strong, graceful women are the inspiration for Nacre Wine.

About the Winemaker – Meg Wallace

Meg didn’t grow up dreaming of vineyards and cellars. Raised on the South Coast of NSW, her early years were more about beaches than agriculture. But life has a way of rewriting the script.

After studying (briefly) and spending most of her 20s immersed in Sydney’s hospitality scene, Meg took a detour to London—where a serendipitous job at a wine bar near London Bridge changed everything. Surrounded by exceptional wines and inspired by travel through Europe, including an unforgettable stay with friends in Tuscany, Meg’s casual love of wine became something much deeper.

Returning to Australia in 2011, Meg moved to rural NSW and began studying winemaking at Charles Sturt University. She spent five years honing her skills at Tumblong Estates in Gundagai, working predominately with Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, but always drawn to the intrigue and personality of Italian varieties like Sangiovese, Barbera, and Nebbiolo.

In 2019, a last-minute vintage role brought her to the Alpine Valleys and Billy Button Wines—where she found her winemaking home. Meg continues to work as a winemaker at Billy Button while pouring her passion into her own small-batch label, Nacre Wine.

Meg’s approach is humble, hands-on, and deeply thoughtful. Her wines reflect the cool climate of the Alpine Valleys, the character of the varieties she loves, and the long, winding path that brought her here.

It was that first vintage in the Alpine Valleys that sealed her connection to the region—and brought to fruition Nacre. A seed that was planted during her studies at CSU finally had a home to grow.

Launched in 2021, Nacre Wine is a slow-burn passion project that celebrates quality over quantity. Each release is a thoughtful expression of variety, site, and season. With just a few wines crafted each year, the focus remains on Meg’s favorite varieties and styles.

“Starting a new business while raising small children has been my greatest challenge and my proudest achievement. Nacre has taken time—but it's been worth every moment. The Alpine Valleys and surrounding regions offer a abundance of newer alternate varieties to Australia and I love being in the thick of it. I’m thrilled to now share these wines with the world.”
